This website investigates the relationship between the West and Japan at the end of the nineteenth century and middle of the twentieth century through the influence of clothing from both countries. Paintings and portraits from that era are analyzed. The usage of Japanese fashion is explored in how western artists utilized it comparing it to how Japanese artists did. Then, how western fashion is adopted into Japanese fashion is examined and what western clothing came to symbolize is discovered. Finally, it's seen how the two fashion cultures interacted with one another to create a new type of fashion that was never seen before. Due to the opening of commerce between Europe and Japan, Japanese fabrics arrived in Europe and began to be used in the fashion of that time. It altered the combination of fabrics, colors, and designs in European fashion.
